Wok & Wildflowers
We offered a Hiking Challenge in 2017, 2018 & 2019
during the spring wildflower season.
We hope anyone who can safely—with appropriate physical distancing—is able to enjoy the seasonal wildflowers  in bloom in late April and early May 2020.
We look forward to offering Wok & Wildlfowers in 2021.

Elephant Head is the eastern hill on Chelan Butte. If you look at Chelan Butte from the city of Chelan it is the smaller peak to the left.

DIRECTIONS:

  • Park at the trailhead located at 1015 Gorge Road, and walk across the street to find the trail.

  • Start your hike on the Jeep trail that goes straight up the mountain.

  • After hiking a quarter mile up, you will come to a trail that splits off to the right (you'll see a big rock and by a trail marker). We suggest taking this trail over taking the steep climb directly up the mountain.

  • You will hike down a small ravine and come up on the other side and another quarter mile later take the first left (there should be another trail maker directing you to the hiking trail).

  • Once you are on this part of the trail simply proceed up the mountain.

  • Along the way, you'll come to 3 benches where you can rest and enjoy the view. If you feel you may not make it to the top, and you'd like to participate in the challenge simply take a photo with one of the benches. The steepest climbs are to benches 1 & 2.  You'll come to amazing views after you pass bench 2, and there are parts where it feels like the trail leads right to the sky even though the incline is minimal until well after bench 3.

  • About a quarter mile after bench 3, you will come to a fork in the road. The main trail goes up to the top of Chelan Butte (right) and separates from a short trail leading up to the top of Elephant Head (left).

  • After you climb the short hill to the peak of Elephant Head, you'll see bench 4 and the cairn along with magnificent views of the town and the Columbia River. If you'd like to participate in the challenge, please take a photo of yourself with the bench or cairn to post on Facebook to show you completed the challenge.

CHALLENGE HAS ENDED FOR 2019
We look forward to offering Wok & Wildflowers in 2021.

If you hike this trail in hot weather, you could run into snakes and staying on the trail (rather than off trail on the grass) is best, also check wind and weather conditions, take water, wear comfortable shoes, take an optional snack and optional walking stick/poles. Please consult others or read online trip reports to see if this hike feels right for you.

From the parking lot there is also a smaller compacted gravel trail that takes you down to the Chelan river.
